When The Thief Comes…

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy

Demonic oppression is real. The thief comes to kill to steal and to destroy (John 10:10a). Many Christians know this verse by heart but how ready are they when the thief actually strikes? The Bible tells us to be sober and vigilant; because our adversary the devil, like a roaring lion is on the prowl, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8).

The year has just started and going by pretty fast. Most of us are transferring our resolutions from paper to actuality. A lot of us have deadlines to meet and are quite focused on ‘to do lists’. Is anyone prepared for when the thief comes? What do you do when you’re suddenly faced with ‘emergency warfare’?

Brethren, we are in spiritual warfare. The Bible is clear in telling us that our struggle is not against human beings, but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness. What that means is that our battle is against various demonic powers that are in the world today!

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” – Ephesians 6:12

In the recent past, I have had to re-learn that ignoring wickedness doesn’t make it go away. Being “busy doing God’s work” does not necessarily keep the enemy away. Also, when we’re not as alert as we should be, the thief comes to wreak havoc and then goes away. His leaving does not mean that he has carried his chaos with him. And without the help of the Holy Spirit, the parties affected might begin attacking each other or harming themselves – furthering the enemy’s work of destruction.

Jesus giving the Parable of the Weeds said, “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.” – Matthew 13:25. The enemy that sowed them is the devil… (Matthew 13:39a).

May the Lord help us stay awake and prepared.

How can you identify demonic activity?

One of the ways is by discernment where God by His Holy Spirit reveals it to you. Every born-again believer has a certain level of discernment, which increases as the Believer matures in the Spirit.

God can supernaturally reveal the presence of a foul spirit by the Word of Knowledge (one of the nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit as described in 1 Corinthians 12:1-11.) So as to enable us to more effectively minister to the needs of people, to know and understand situations, circumstances, strategies of the enemy, etc. so that we can know how to speak with a knowledge that can surprise, baffle, dis-arm and expose works of darkness; and bring answers, healing and understanding to God’s people.

Another way is by detection where by your observation you can notice that something isn’t right. Here’s a quick checklist:
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. – Galatians 5:19-21

One woman whose daughter was oppressed by a demon must have made some observations and realized that the enemy had invaded her household.

And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. – Matthew 15:22 KJV

What is God’s will regarding demonic oppression?

We read that the Master healed the woman’s daughter (verse 28). In the same Matthew 15 we are told of a man who Jesus healed from an unclean spirit.

Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. – Matthew 12:22

God’s will is to loose the chains of injustice, to untie the cords of the yoke that anyone oppressed should be set free! And so He sent His Son to destroy these very works of the devil. Praise the Lord!

Jesus said, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” – John 10:10 ESV

It will do us good to remember that oppression is of the devil and Jesus came to set us free and give us victory over all manner of oppression.

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. – Acts 10:38

Some Lessons Learned

• Be sober, alert and prepared all year round, in every season.
• Don’t ignore foul activity; attack at the first sign.
• A little snake will eventually grow into a big snake – if you don’t crush its head.
• Whenever you see the “fruit” of demonic oppression, realize that there is a “root” that MUST be uprooted.
• Demons are not prayed out, they are CAST out with power and authority in the name of Jesus.

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; – Mark 16:17
